The time had finally come to exchange it for the top of the range Husqvarna Vitpilen 701. This was the one I’d be waiting for. Although Husqvarna doesn’t openly state it, this bike is without a doubt a modern interpretation of a cafe racer. It’s powerful, lightweight and minimal; just as any good cafe racer should be. Style: With the modern café racer segment having existed for some time now, the sector has grown from exclusively being comprised of retro-themed models, to now including an increasingly diverse array of contemporary takes on the genre, such as Husqvarna’s Vitpilen 401 and 701 and FB Mondial’s HPS 125. There’s more than one kind of café. The Husqvarna Vitpilen 401’s engine is also found in the KTM 390 Duke, which starts at $5499. Both bikes’ engines deliver 44 hp. But according to Cycle World’s dyno, while the Vitpilen 401 has 26 lb-ft at the rear wheel, the 390 Duke has 27 lb-ft. However, the Husqvarna café racer is about 20 pounds lighter than KTM’s entry-level naked. Coming to the Vitpilen, it is a café racer-like offering, and I must say that the overall stance and posture is just spot on. It gets a low-set clip-on handlebar and rear-set footpegs, which give it an extremely aggressive squatted down stance, but more on that later. I just love the minimalistic and spotless design.
